Jahresvorlesung Judaistik
The “Esther Moyal – Taha Hussein Lecture on Jewish–Muslim History of Knowledge” is held annually at Martin-Luther University Halle-Wittenberg. It is organized by the Department of Jewish Studies and is addressed to both academic and non-academic audiences.
Through this lecture series, the Department invites internationally distinguished scholars to Halle to shed light on central themes of Jewish history in their entanglements with Islamic and Arab contexts from a historical perspective.
The annual lecture is conceived as a forum in which the significance of the long-standing entanglement of Jewish and Islamic history for contemporary societal questions is newly brought into focus.

The 2026 Annual Lecture in Jewish Studies is dedicated to the role of trauma as an analytical category in the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The lecture focuses on the question of how historical experiences of violence, persecution, and loss are remembered and passed down across generations and continue to shape societal patterns of interpretation. Drawing on the events of October 7, the lecture examines the extent to which such experiences shape both Israeli and Palestinian perspectives.
It takes into account various historical contexts, including the significance of the Shoah for Israeli-Jewish self-understanding as well as Palestinian experiences of displacement and loss. The lecture adopts a multi-perspective and historically grounded approach, shedding light on the interplay between memory, history, and the present.
The annual lecture is a public event aimed at both university and non-university audiences. It serves as a forum for scholarly reflection, social dialogue, and interdisciplinary exchange.
The lecture will be delivered in English; questions and discussion may also take place in German.
