Research Project
Working Title: Abba Gordin (1887-1964) and yiddish anarchism in New York 1937-1945.
Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Giuseppe Veltri
Summary: The study is a microanalysis of yiddish-anarchist identities and self-locations. The debates on Gordins ideas on the relation between jewish „religion“ or „ethnicity“, Yidishkeyt and anarchist „politics“ demonstrate, where boundaries of the „Us“ are drawn in this part of social movements. Disputes are reconstructed for the 1940ies and the weekly yiddish paper, the Fraye Arbeter Shtime. Questions are, what is crucial in which context and how are do these elements in their political theories „act“. Theories regarding Religious Nonconformism and Cultural Dynamics can be raised with regard to in- and exclusion in „overrolled“ cultures and pluralistic environments.
